Neuromodulators (Botox®)
Botox® injections for wrinkle reduction.
Many of the wrinkles we have on our face are created by years of tension in our own facial muscles from stress, frowning, smoking, smiling, squinting and more. Neuromodulators are the technical word for Botox® and other brands of wrinkle removers. These are botulinum based toxins that are injected into selected facial muscles to smooth dynamic wrinkles by reducing the transmission of nerve impulses that contract the muscles. The more Botox injected, the more relaxed the muscles, the less dynamic wrinkles.
This is a very effective treatment that typically provides 75% and more reduction in wrinkles. Results last from 3- 5 months as muscles gradually recovery to full function. Injection size is measured in UNITs of biological activity. Botox®, Dysport®, Xeomin®, Jeuveau®, and Daxxify are common brands approved by FDA. There are differences in prices, units used, effectiveness, months duration, and sometimes allergenic reactions.
Other important uses of neuromodulators are treating excessive sweating or called hyperhidrosis, and treatments for migraine headaches, and clenching teeth (TMJ).
Usually 20–60 units are injected per session depending on the area. Common wrinkle sites include the forehead, frown lines, and crow's feet. Other areas include masseter jaw slimming or TMJ, neck bands, bunny lines, and lip flips, chin, or DAO. Typically, after a larger unit startup treatment, smaller maintenance treatments are scheduled in the 3 to 6 month range depending on individual patient needs.
Botox injection is fast, typically a 15 minute appointment. Injections are only a minor discomfort; described as a slight pinch like a TB test. The results are not immediate. It takes 2-4 days to start to kick in and final results will be seen in 2-3 weeks. Patients continue normal daily activities, but to protect the skin of the injection area, no swimming, hot yoga, saunas or strenuous exercise. In particular, avoid massages to the injection sites for a couple of weeks.
